How to start meditating at home

When we think about meditation, we think about how it can help to combat stress, help to combat chronic pain, fosters physical health, help you make sleep better, make you feel happy, live a peaceful life, and many others along with them.

But when we think deep into it, it is a doorway to the things that are still unknown. It will help us to get a sense of what we actually are.

When you are going to meditate you will notice how unruly your mind is inside.

How to control your mind from unwanted thoughts ?

People who are starting to meditate for the very first time, they start thinking about their past or their daily life routine; but they are not supposed to think these things when they are meditating.

You need to beat these crazy thoughts of your mind. Thinking this is quite natural but you need to get over it. When you are doing it regularly and working hard for it then you will find ways to peacefulness and clarity.

Now here we will talk about some tips how to start meditating at home, let’s have a look:

Sitting posture

  1. Back: The things you need to remember is that you need to keep your back straight while you are sitting. You ought to keep your back erect, and if you are sitting on a chair then you must not rest your back on the chair. This keeps your mind and your body alert, and by doing it this way you can concentrate on your breath more easily.
  2. Eyes: The main thing to achieve is to work out your attention muscle, so you can keep your eyes open or close. If you feel it is working with open eyes you can do that, and if it is going good with closed eyes then you can do it that way.
    But, if you feel tired or feeling that you are drowsy with closed eyes, then try to open them slightly and focus on the floor at any point so that you can be alert again.
  3. Hands: Now, you need not to worry about the position of your hands. You can rest them in any position that is most comfortable for you.
  4. Legs: You need to keep your legs cross if you think it will work fine for you, or can lay them straight as per you desire. Again, the main goal is to strengthen the attention muscle so it can be good to keep the legs crossed as it is a common pose and comfortable one.

Again, find a place and posture that keeps you straight and upright; and is most comfortable for you. When you are checking other’s opinions about sitting position, keep one thing in mind that they vary as per people’s desire. For example, if one posture is working good for someone that does not mean it is going to work the same way for you as well. So, you need to find the most comfortable posture for you and to work out in that very posture.

 

What to do

Every day you are going through a lot of things and when you are meditating you try not to think about anything that keeps you in stress during meditation. First of all, you need to get comfortable and then start meditating. For this you need to start the timer and then start focusing.

You need to bring your focus and attention to your breath. We can say that meditation is all about focusing on your breath and this is what, that makes meditation worthwhile and difficult at the same time.

Focus on any element of your breath that you want to, for how the air feels when you inflate, to how it exits back through your nose; also, you can focus on the sensation of your nose when the air is passing through, and the sound of the breath as well. Do not thing too much about it and just focus.

The hard part is, you need not to analyse any factor of your breathing you just need to bring the attention to your breath with analyzing it.

It is natural that your mind will start thinking the things that need not to be thought, but do not worry; your attention will turn back to your breath when you realize that your mind has gone wrong. Just bring your attention back and do not be hard on your self as you are trying it first time and it is early stage for you.

Keep doing this practice till your timer sounds that the time is over!

Meditating for less time daily is far better than meditating for more time once a week.

Start it from few to more! If you are starting it from thirty minutes a day then you might get discouraged and you will think that how boring this practice is. The recommendation about time is that you should start from less, as in ten minutes a day in the beginning. Even your mind is going crazy other thoughts, you will get benefits through this process in the start.

The timer alarm must be gentle one so that it will not distract or disturb you.

After all this, if you are unable to concentrate, start counting your breath, this trick is very much useful when you cannot concentrate.

Be kind to your self and do not get frustrated just think that you are doing it for the very first time and you might get troubles in the start.

The imperative thing among all is to practice it every day and to make it a habit of yours. When you are meditating on daily basis then you will see that it has become an integral part of your life like sleeping, brushing and exercising.
